How to perform a trace route

A Trace route (tracert) you the route over the network between two systems, listing all the routers a connection must pass through to get to its final destination. It can help determine why a connection to a given server might be poor, and can often help identify where the problem, if any, is occurring.

There are two ways to get the information needed for a tracert. The first is probably the simplest way.

Download a program called WINMTR. YOu ocan find it at http://winmtr.net/.  Once loaded on your computer, set the "Host" to your server IP/Domain and let it run for about 50 times (50 on the sent column). Once done, stop it, and copy it to the clipboard. Paste the info onto an email to support@digi-stream,.info.

The second way is rather involved...

For Windows Users

  1. If using XP, click on Start, then Run (Vista users can press Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog).
  2. A new window titled "Run" will appear.  Type the command ‘cmd’ and press enter to bring up the windows command prompt.
  3. At the DOS Prompt, type: "tracert domain.com" (without quotes) (i.e.: tracert cp1.digi-stream.com)

To copy the output from this test you must right click and select the “Mark” option which will enable you to highlight the test’s output. Once you have finished highlighting the output right-click again to copy it into your clipboard ready for pasting into a text editor. Please be sure to send this to us for support purposes in order to determine if there is a problem in your routing. 

For Mac Users

  1. Double-click Macintosh HD on the Desktop.
  2. Double-click the Applications folder.
  3. Double-click the Utilities folder.
  4. Double-click on Network Utility.
  5. Select the Traceroute tab.
  6. Enter the address you wish to trace route.
  7. Click Trace.

To copy the output of this test you must highlight the results and use the Command+C to copy the information into your clipboard ready to be pasted into your text editor. Please be sure to send this to us for support purposes in order to determine if there is a problem in your routing.
