MP3 Bitrate Explained

Bitrate describes the amount of encoded audio data used each second. It is normally expressed in kilobits per second (kbps).

What 128 kbps Means

A 128 kbps MP3 uses 128 kilobits of encoded audio data per second. It is a common streaming bitrate.

What 192 kbps Means

A 192 kbps MP3 contains more encoded audio data per second than a 128 kbps file and generally requires more storage and bandwidth.

What 320 kbps Means

A 320 kbps MP3 uses substantially more data than a 128 kbps file. It can preserve more information from the source, but the larger bitrate does not automatically make a poor source recording better.

Streaming Considerations

When selecting a streaming bitrate, consider your station's desired sound quality, available bandwidth, and the maximum bitrate supported by the streaming service.
